The sounds of traditional and contemporary Japanese music come to Orcas Island when Také to Ito, featuring koto master Curtis Patterson and shakuhachi master Bruce Huebner, perform at Odd Fellows Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 8. Také to Ito - a name evoking také (bamboo) and ito (string), brings together two musicians who have devoted much of their lives to the study and performance of Japanese music. Their music draws on the traditions of the bamboo shakuhachi flute and the 13-string koto while incorporating original compositions, improvisation and contemporary influences. Patterson and Huebner have collaborated for many years, performing music that ranges from Japanese classical repertoire to original compositions and improvisation. Their work is deeply influenced by the natural world and by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in simplicity, imperfection and transience.

Short-story authors Diana Xin & Hillary Behrman present their books. In Book of Exemplary Women, Xin's debut short story collection, women across different stages of life—and death—resist erasure and make their stories known. Contending with scorned lovers, bothersome ghosts, and their own unruly desires, these women hold the world at bay while holding each other close. They reach past geographical and generational divides to find communion and conviction. Behrman’s Lake Effect takes you from unmapped mountain ridges to wild urban places, and the outskirts of a desert outpost—exploring the many ways we love, labor, and isolate ourselves. In these stories, characters are rarely headed where they want to be.

Join the San Juan Islands Museum of Art for a free, hands-on Family Art Days class exploring the Talking Stick, a sacred instrument used to hold respectful attention while gathered in groups and long an important part of the culture of many nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast. In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, local artist and educator Memes Bouwman will guide children and their accompanying adult in learning about this tradition and making as many Talking Sticks as time allows. Bring a sewing work in progress on the interisland ferry and join our at-sea fiber arts circle! The interisland ferry is pretty dreamy when you don't have anywhere you have to be, don't you think? Bring a sewing or other fiber arts work in progress and join our interisland ferry fiber arts circle! Here are some ideas: a garment you would like to mend a knitting or crochet project needle felting quilting sashiko or embroidery garment making, stuffy making, anything else you can think of! Walk on and make the loop around the islands, be ready to spend about 2-3 hours on the ferry. This circle is facilitated by textile artist and Alchemy staff member Katey Rissi. Katey will share a different skill from her own practice at each circle, so you are welcome to come just to learn something new, bring your own project and build textiles community, or both, up to you! Please walk on and meet us on board the ferry. A great option for folks from other islands to join in! We will be on the ferry that leaves Friday Harbor at 11:30am, Orcas at 12:50pm, Shaw at 1:05pm and Lopez at 1:25pm. We'll arrive back at Friday Harbor at 2:15pm. The Orcas Chamber of Commerce and Orcas Community Resource Center are presenting four workshops designed to provide Orcas small business owners training and skill development. The series will be held in the community room at the Orcas Library. October 13 and October 27, 5:30–7:30 p.m.: First Aid for Small Business Preparing Your Business—and Your Household—for Winter Steve McCaslin of WSU and Orcas-based financial literacy specialist Elisabeth Britt will co-facilitate this two-part workshop. Participants will practice forecasting winter cash flow, accounting for business expenses and essential household needs, identifying potential shortfalls, and planning for spring reopening costs. We’ll explore practical steps owners can take before cash becomes tight. November 10 th, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m .: Demystifying Washington State’s Business Taxes M aking sense of B&O tax, state and local sales tax, use tax, and excise tax returns—with practical guidance on what to report and when to file. B&O taxes, sales tax, use tax, deductions, filing frequencies, and excise tax returns can feel intimidating. Diana Villegas, tax information specialist, will guide participants through these topics, helping small business owners better understand their responsibilities and feel more confident about filing. December 8, 5:30–7:30 p.m.: From Receipts to Reliable Records, turn receipts, invoices, and bank statements into organized business records with a simple routine you can maintain. This hands-on workshop will help small business owners and sole proprietors organize receipts, invoices, and bank transactions. Participants will practice recording income and expenses, distinguishing business and personal transactions, and checking records against bank and credit card statements. They will leave with a manageable weekly and monthly record keeping routine.

On October 13 at 6:30 p.m., award-winning science and environmental journalist Meera Subramanian , author of the nonfiction graphic novel A Better World Is Possible: Global Youth Confront the Climate Crisis , will be in conversation with poet + environmental journalist Maleea Acker.
