Our October Featured Artist at Orcas Island Artworks is Maria Papademetriou . Exhibited will be multi-media works from her ongoing "Lost Ancestors" series in sculptural mixed media and collage. In Maria’s own words: “My work is a kind of visual storytelling used to create a narrative, mood, or message. My creative process is multilayered and intuitive, using found objects, ceramics, and old photographs. From a very early age, 4 to be exact, I have been fascinated by the discarded and the forgotten. The 14th annual Friday Harbor Film Festival opens Thursday, October 22 at 5:00 PM with a free collaborative event from SJIMA and FHFF at the Palace Theatre. Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and SJIMA Guest Curator Meg Partridge presents two short films, Portrait of Imogen, in which photographer Imogen Cunningham shares her own work, and Outta My Light! Photographer Rondal Partridge, a portrait of Imogen's son, who apprenticed with Dorothea Lange and assisted Ansel Adams. A Q&A with Meg follows the screening, then a walk-through of the related exhibitions at the San Juan Islands Museum of Art. Admission is free, but an RSVP is required for reserved seating. FHFF passholders receive free admission to SJIMA throughout festival weekend.

The Scouts of San Juan Island is hosting Haunted Forest Cemetery Tours from 5 pm to dusk (family-friendly), dusk to 10 pm (much scarier) Friday and Saturday Nights ( weather permitting) . The 4th Annual Orcas Island Adult Spelling Bee returns on Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m. at Orcas Center, promising an evening of friendly competition, community spirit, plenty of laughs, and perhaps a few spectacular spelling mishaps! Hosted by the Orcas Island Public Library, this beloved annual event brings islanders together for a lively celebration of language, laughter, and the joy of a little friendly rivalry. We’re looking for adult contestants who are ready to step up to the microphone and put their spelling skills to the test! You don’t have to be a champion speller to participate—just bring a sense of humor, a little courage, and a willingness to have fun. To participate, please email sgailey@orcaslibrary.org. Digging into Bones Class Built for Sea & Sky: Drawing the Hidden Architecture of Salish Sea Birds Saturday, October 24, 4:00-6:00 PM PT *Hybrid Class* What can a bird’s bones reveal about how it flies, dives, and survives? If you are looking for something fun to do in the spirit of Halloween, why not "play with bones" this October and come join us at The Whale Museum for a two-hour nature journaling class exploring the remarkable structure of Salish Sea birds. Participants will get an up-close look at real avian skulls, wings, feet, and skeletal specimens generously on loan from Salish Wildlife Rescue , using drawing as a way to investigate the relationship between form, function, and the lives of birds. The instructor, Quinn Fitzpatrick, will be teaching virtually in real time via Zoom while participants either gather in person at The Whale Museum and work directly with the specimens or join virtually . Wine and snacks will be provided for those participating in person at TWM. In this class, you will: • Learn core observational techniques. Practice shape, form, proportion, value, texture, and negative space to make complex natural forms easier to draw. • Train your eyes to see like a naturalist. Use sketching as an active tool to slow down, notice details, ask questions, and discover connections between form and function. • Explore how structure reflects function. Compare specimens side by side and consider what skulls, wings, feet, and bones can reveal about different ways of moving, feeding, and living. • Build a deeper connection to local wildlife. Leave with practical nature-journaling techniques and a richer understanding of birds that live in and around the Salish Sea. Rather than focusing on making a “perfect” drawing, this workshop uses sketching as a tool for curiosity and observation. We’ll compare birds with very different ways of living, from divers and underwater “flyers” to waders and fish-hunting raptors, and consider what their anatomy can tell us about life in the Salish Sea. Whether you haven't picked up a pencil in decades or keep a field sketchbook every day, you’ll find plenty of room for observation, discovery and deeper study. A supplies list will be provided upon registration. Please note: While registration is currently open, processing class registrations may be delayed until after October 2. If interested in this class, you must register by October 16. Quinn Fitzpatrick is a naturalist and educator who helps people connect with the natural world through creativity. They have more than 15 years of experience teaching learners of all ages. Quinn is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Environmental Studies and brings a science informed perspective to their work, helping people notice and understand the more-than-human world. A graduate of the University of Washington’s Natural Science Illustration program, they specialize in botanical and landscape drawing and place-based nature journaling. Please join us at 1 pm on Saturday, October 24th at the Orcas Public Library for a native pollinator presentation by Russel Barsh. Russel is the author of the Kwiaht field guide to Butterflies of the San Juan Islands, and co-author of Kwiaht's 2026 illustrated book, Naming and Knowing Indigenous Plants of the San Juan Islands. Following the presentation, Russel will be available to answer any questions you may have about identifying and protecting our native pollinators. This event is free and open to all.

Join the San Juan Islands Museum of Art for a free, hands-on Family Art Days class inspired by artist Joseph Cornell's Shadow Memory Boxes, or "Poetic Theaters" of story. Led by local artist Amy Plant, children and their accompanying adult will make a miniature story scene inside a small box frame using decoupage and assemblage with found objects. A treasure trove of materials will be provided, and families are welcome to bring small items from home, such as photos, maps, tickets, book pages, shells, board game pieces, buttons, and tiny toys. The class is free for children ages 5 and up with a supervising adult, and preregistration is encouraged as space is limited.

Please join local naturalist, River Augenstein, for this series of mushroom identification and discovery hikes in Moran State Park. You will learn about many of Orca’s Island’s distinctive mushroom species; how they live, where they grow, and which species are edible and medicinal. There will be an emphasis on mycological nomenclature using the binomial system of classification. See poster for description and trail head for each hike.

Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival Presents: C Street Brass Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. Center Stage Free Concert C Street Brass C Street Brass will return to the San Juan Islands October 26 and 27 as part of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival’s Musicians-in-Residence program. Known for their energetic performances and wide-ranging musical style, the ensemble moves comfortably between traditional chamber music, jazz, and popular music, creating concerts that are engaging and accessible to audiences of all ages. During their island visit, C Street Brass will present two free public concerts. The first will take place Monday, October 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Church on Lopez Island. The ensemble will then travel to Orcas Island for a second performance Tuesday, October 27, at 5 p.m. at Orcas Center. Both performances are free and open to everyone. C Street Brass was Ensemble-in-Residence at Carnegie Mellon University from 2012 to 2015. During those years, the musicians developed a deep connection to Pittsburgh’s vibrant music community and have continued to make the city their home. The ensemble has appeared on performing arts series throughout the country, including the Corpus Christi Chamber Music Series, Chamber Music Pittsburgh, and the Strings Music Festival, where they served as Artists- in-Residence. Their international engagements have included a residency at the Traveling Notes Music Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia, and a tour of Doha, Qatar, where they served as ambassadors for Carnegie Mellon University. Education and outreach are also an important part of C Street Brass’s mission. The musicians are passionate about encouraging and inspiring the next generation of performers and recently led a masterclass at the Juilliard School for its brass chamber music seminar. During their island visit, they will work with music students on both Lopez and Orcas and perform for local school communities. The Musicians-in-Residence program brings professional musicians to the islands not only to perform, but also to connect with local audiences and students through education and community engagement. C Street Brass’s visit is made possible through a partnership between the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, the Orcas School Music Advocacy Group, Orcas Center, Rosario Resort, and Cultural Access San Juans. Island residents and visitors are invited to experience these lively performances and welcome C Street Brass back to the islands for two special evenings of music and community.

Middle and High School Students are welcome to attend this weekly class on Wednesdays beginning October 7 thru December 16 from 3:30-4:30pm in the Black Box to expand their  musical theory and knowledge, rehearse using healthy vocal techniques, practice  standing with poise and posture, and confidently sing rich harmonies with  friends. Performance opportunities will range from holiday carols flash mob style to collaborations with local community ensembles including a concert on December 5 and 6 at the Orcas Center. No experience necessary but come ready to focus and learn! No class on November 25. This program is supported in part by the Music Advocacy Group “Joyce Burghardt Fund” (MAG) and the San Juan County Cultural Access Tax (CAT).

Do you want feedback from other artists on an art piece you're stuck on? Do you want to talk about art with other islanders? Join us! We meet every other Wednesday evening and share projects we are working on that we'd like feedback on, past pieces we'd like to build upon, or any other in-progress or completed work we'd like to share. You are also welcome to come just to check out work and talk with other artists! This is an informal supportive group of artists providing feedback for one another, discussing ideas, and hopefully laying the groundwork for creating new work and new collaborations. This is a drop-in group, you can attend as many as you'd like. We like folks to sign up ahead of time so we can best organize the space, but you may show up at the door as well. Suggested donation $15-$25. Artists Critique Group is held in the dome on the AAC campus.
